Winter boat forecasting – how to prepare your boat before the ice comes

Veneen talvi

Finland’s long and changeable winters make tough demands on boats. If you maintain and care for your boat properly in autumn, spring launching is easy and worry-free. Here are clear, practical instructions – and direct links to accessories from Veneilytarvikekauppa.fi.

1) Wash and protect the outer surfaces before storage

  • Rinse salt water, dirt and vegetation off the hull and deck immediately after lifting. A clean surface will stand the winter better and the spring sawing will be smoother.
  • Accessories for washing and surface care: boat care & cleaning.
  • For engine compartment grease and oil: LIQUI MOLY Engine Compartment Cleaner, 400 ml.

2) Winterising the engine

  • Change the engine oil when it is warm and replace the filters as instructed. Flush with fresh water and, if necessary, use the manufacturer’s recommended preservatives and protectants.
  • To help you get started in cold and damp weather: Bardahl Quick Start 400 ml.

3) Electrical system and batteries

4) Water and fuel systems

  • Empty the freshwater system (tank, hoses, pumps). Keep the taps open to prevent ice from breaking the fittings.
  • You can keep the fuel tank full to reduce condensation. If necessary, use additives according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

5) Fittings and textiles

  • Rinse and dry sails, ropes and cushions. Store in a dry and airy place to avoid mould.
  • Check winches, hinges and locks; lightly lubricate before winter.

6) Winter storage and covers

  • A good shelter is airy and durable. Avoid fully sealed solutions – ventilation prevents condensation and mould growth.
  • Wide range of tarpaulins, tents and covers: boat covers, tents & tarpaulins.
